We will explore their findings and also discuss health, environment, convenience and other aspects of the various modes of transportation available to children and adults. MLR/PEI Mathematics
6th-8th Grade Presentations & Activities
Alternative Fuels Debate Grade:
6-8 One of the best ways to fully understand something is to have to defend it. Students will be divided into teams and assigned a type of fuel to defend and promote as the most logical choice among a number of options. Students will learn that defending an issue does not require that they personally believe it to be the most logical choice but rather that they must effectively argue on its behalf. Originally developed by the NEED Project, this debate will allow students to gain a greater understanding on not only their own fuel type but others as well.
Science

Alternative Fuels & Vehicles Grade:
6-8 There are a number of issues environmental, economic and political that warrant taking a look at why we should diversify our modes of transportation and the fuels we use. This presentation reviews the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of alternative fuels and transportation. Students will use their math skills to help calculate energy input to output totals for the development and use of various fuels. They will also compare numbers for various modes of transportation and see that the easy choice may not always be the best choice.
Science
and Technology
Climate Change Grade:
6-8 Climate Change is not a new phenomenon and in fact the Earths climate has changed significantly at different periods in time. However, in the last 200 years the Earths climate has changed at a rate that is above the norm. After exploring the components of climate change, we will crunch a few numbers and run a few experiments to help students grasp the issues. Lastly, we will explore some of the options we can take to help reverse the effects of the last 200 years.

The Scientific and Technological Enterprise D.
The Physical Setting
Economics of Energy and Transportation Supply and Demand Grade:
6-8 The more things change . The oil crisis of the 1970s and our recent experience with gas and oil prices will serve as a backdrop for a group discussion centered on supply and demand. What role does convenience, availability, consumer demand, politics and perception play in shaping the market. There was a time when electric vehicles were more popular than gas powered vehicles and when public transit was plentiful. We will look back and identify critical turning points that helped us get to where we are now.

Trip Chainers Grade:
6-8
* 55 minutes This is a hands-on data gathering activity that allows students to gain an appreciation of how their decisions have impacts that they may not have considered. Students will be instructed on how to collect their own transportation data that they will then use to chart topics such as CO2 output, financial costs and time dedicated to transportation. The wrap up allows students time to review their results and discuss options that they can pursue to reduce their transportation based impacts. This activity blends a variety of math, science and social studies activities and discussion threads. MLR/PEI Mathematics
The Choices We Make Getting from Here to There Grade:
6-8 Learning how to weigh available options and make decisions that have positive outcomes is the name of the game in this activity. Understanding that there can be more than one right choice when confronted with a decision is important just as is knowing how to make decisions in a group. At the end of the exercise the teams will report there results and explain how they handled the dynamic of making decisions as a group.
